Dreamtime now

It's hot... still warm at 9:30 PM.... Outside, across the avenues, somewhere in a house on the facing hill, some kind of Mariachi/Salsa band plays. But it's not an entire band. 2 trumpets, a trombone, and drums... Very loose, the brass and drum sound careening down the canyon and through the open windows of unsuspecting listeners like me. Me here, a little unfocused, with much to do before departing for Rio on Sunday to finish the Brazilian recording with Chico. I'll be recording horns this Friday in LA, the Rio session is on Monday, with percussion and two guest vocalists TBA... And little things like going to the cleaners, about 15 phone calls, tedium...just to be ready.
Dylan's CD is ultra-fine, clean, his eerie voice supported by a great band of very musical players. Songs sweet, full of ripe feeling, melodious; blues; dark, minor contemplations; some very funny, cutting, lines.
Morning will include a walk, contacting some journalists with whom interviews have been arranged, some computer work. Perhaps a full day at home is in the cards. Dreamtime now.

Sunday sounds

Listening to Martha Wainwright's debut album and Juana Molina's new "Son"....
There's a lot of creativity, energy, raw talent, nerve, and beauty in these two women.
Billy D sounds great on drums on Martha's record too....

House

It's the first time in my life I've ever lived in a house.
Late most nights, and early most mornings, there is fog... then it burns away. There is the greenbelt of the Mt. Washington hills, the train tracks far beyond, sometimes a train whistle. Dogs, roosters. People seem to keep roosters in this part of the city.
I keep marveling at the fact that I pulled this off!
I found a box with a few LPs in it, so I fired up the Stingray (my Manley Stingray amp) and my turntable and listened to "My Song" (Keith Jarrett), "Gafieira Moderna" (Joyce), and Rickie Lee Jones' debut album.

A quiet Friday, still getting better from the "sickness"...

Modern Times

After seeing the stunning performance of "Cold Irons Bound" on this page:

I am SO ready for Bob Dylan's new record "Modern Times."

Who is the drummer? He's terrific. Their little "free jazz" excursion before the tune starts is priceless. They are actually playing a bit like a jazz band.

Bob Dylan towers above them all!
